Sounds of Language Flashcards
What is phonetics?
The general study of the characteristics of speech sounds
What is articulatory phonetics?
the study of how speech sounds are made
What is acoustic phonetics?
The study of the physical properties of speech as sound waves in the air
What is auditory phonetics?
The study of the perception, via the ear, of speech sounds
What sounds are made when the vocal folds are spread apart and the air from the lungs passes between them with no obstruction?
Voiceless sounds
What sounds are made when the vocal folds are drawn together and the air from the lungs repeatedly pushes them apart as it passes through?
Voiced sounds
What is the location inside the mouth at which the constriction takes place called?
Point of articulation of a sound
What kind of consonants are formed using both lips?
Bilabial consonants
What kind of consonants are formed using the upper front teeth and the lower lip?
Labiodental consonants
What type of consonants are made when the front of the tongue is lifted to the space behind the upper teeth?
Alveolar consonants
What type of consonant is formed when the tongue is placed between the teeth?
Interdental consonants
What kinds of consonants are made when the tongue is placed at the roof of the mouth?
Palatal consonants
What kinds of consonants are produced toward the back of the mouth?
Velar consonants
What kinds of consonants are made when there is no manipulation of the air passing out of the mouth?
Glottal consonants
What kind of consonants are formed when the tip of the tongue touches the upper teeth?
Dental consonants
What is the way sounds are pronounced called?
Manner of articulation
What is the manner of articulation of stops?
block airflow, let it go abruptly
What is the manner of articulation of fricatives?
almost block airflow, let it escape through a narrow gap
What is the manner of articulation of affricates?
combine a brief stop with a fricative
What is the manner of articulation of nasals?
lower the velum, let air flow out through nose
What is the manner of articulation of liquids?
raise and curl tongue, let airflow escape round the sides
What is the manner of articulation of glides?
move tongue to or from a vowel
What is the major difference between the way consonants and vowels are formed?
Consonant sounds are mostly articulated via obstruction in the vocal tract, vowel sounds are produced with a relatively free flow of air.
What are the two ways to categorize place of articulation of vowels?
High to low and front to back
What is a diphthong
