Sound Waves MUS Flashcards
as sound of music chapter
what do all waves have in common?
they are caused by oscillations, and transfer energy without transferring matter
what is a progressive wave?
a wave that moves energy away from the source
what is a periodic oscillation?
a motion that repeats itself over regular time intervals
what is the time period?
the time taken to complete one cycle
what is the frequency of an oscillation?
the number of cycles per unit of time
what is one cycle per second measured in?`
Hz
give equation of frequency from the time period of a wave
F= 1/T
what is polarisation?
when a wave which was osciallating in multiple planes has been filtered to only oscilate in one.
how would you filter all light out
have one filter to reduce the plane to (i.e) vertical, then have another in a different plane. no light will go through
why is polarisation proof that EM waves are transverse?
only transverse waves oscillate in planes. longitudinal waves’s forwards and backwards motion wouldn’t be in stopped so light would still show even with filters in all directions
