Sound Waves Flashcards
Frequency
the number of cycles a wave completes in a period of time; the number of times something happens in a period of time
The frequency of sound waves change the way something sounds. For example, the notes that come from a flute have a high sound. This means they have a high frequency. On the other hand, the tuba makes very deep noises because it has a low frequency.
Period
Periods consist of elements in the horizontal rows of the periodic table. Elements, in periods, are arranged so that elements with similar properties fall in the same vertical column
Wavelength
the distance, measured in the direction of propagation of a wave, between two successive points in the wave that are characterized by the same phase of oscillation.
Crest
the highest part of a hill or mountain range; summit.
the head or top of anything.
a ridge or ridgelike formation.
the foamy top of a wave.
the point of highest flood, as of a river.
the highest point or level; climax; culmination.
a tuft or other natural growth on the top of the head of an animal, as the comb of a rooster.
anything resembling or suggesting such a tuft.
the ridge of the neck of a horse, dog, etc
Trough
a channel or conduit for conveying water, as a gutter under the eaves of a building for carrying away rain water.
Medium
an intervening substance, as air, through which a force acts or an effect is produced.
Amplitude
the absolute value of the maximum displacement from a zero value during one period of an oscillation
Longitudinal Wave
A wave that is propagated in the same direction as the displacement of the transmitting medium
Electromagnetic
a wave in which the direction of displacement is the same as the direction of propagation, as a sound wave
Spectrum
an array of entities, as light waves or particles, ordered in accordance with the magnitudes of a common physical property, as wavelength or mass: often the band of colors produced when sunlight is passed through a prism, comprising red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet
Transverse Wave
a wave in which the direction of displacement is perpendicular to the direction of propagation, as a surface wave of water.
Compression
the effect, result, or consequence of being compressed.
Rarefraction
the act or process of rarefying
the state of being
Crest
Is the top
Transverse Wave
Side to side motion is called a Transverse Wave a transverse Wave vibrates at right angles to the direction the waves travel.
