sound rev ncert Flashcards
What is sound?
Sound is a form of energy which produces a sensation of hearing in our ears.
What principle states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed?
Conservation of energy
What is required to produce sound?
A vibrating object
What does vibration mean?
A kind of rapid to and fro motion of an object.
What is the medium through which sound is transmitted?
Matter or substance that can be solid, liquid, or gas.
How do particles in a medium behave when sound travels through it?
Particles do not travel to the ear; they oscillate around their equilibrium position.
What is a wave?
A disturbance that moves through a medium when particles set neighbouring particles into motion.
How is sound visualized?
As a wave.
What is the most common medium through which sound travels?
Air
What is a compression?
A region of high pressure created when a vibrating object pushes air.
What is a rarefaction?
A region of low pressure created when a vibrating object moves backwards.
What type of waves are sound waves?
Mechanical waves and longitudinal waves.
What is the distance between two consecutive compressions or rarefactions called?
Wavelength
What is the SI unit of frequency?
Hertz (Hz)
How is frequency defined?
The number of oscillations per unit time.
What is the time period of a wave?
The time taken for one complete oscillation.
What is pitch in relation to sound?
How the brain interprets the frequency of an emitted sound.
What is amplitude?
The magnitude of the maximum disturbance in the medium on either side of the mean value.
How does amplitude affect loudness?
Loudness is determined by amplitude; greater amplitude means louder sound.
What distinguishes quality or timbre of sound?
The characteristic that enables us to distinguish one sound from another having the same pitch and loudness.
What is a tone?
A sound of single frequency.
What is a note?
A sound produced due to a mixture of several frequencies.
What is noise?
Unpleasant sound.
What is music?
Pleasant sound of rich quality.
