A

Vibrating of particles. The vibration of some particles will cause the ones behind and in front of it to move back and forth. This crates compressions and rarefactions

A

Sound waves will reflect if they hit a hard, flat surface. They’ll refract if they enter a different media. As they enter a denser material they’ll speed up

How does sound speed up and slow down as it travels into a denser material? List two explanations.

A

Sound waves travel particle by particle, and a denser material has closer packed particles meaning more collisions would happen and quicker energy transfer will happen. And for a less dense material it’s the opposite
As well as this, when a wave travels in a different medium, it’s wavelength will change, but it’s frequency won’t, so the speed must change to compensate for this

What is echo?

A

Sound reflecting on a hard flat surface. Sound will hit and reflect back which is what you hear in an echo

What is a vacuum in physics l?

A

A vacuum has no matter and the pressure is so low there that the particles there do no effect. E.g. space is a vacuum

A

Because sound travels by particles, and if particles have no effect in a vacuum, sound can’t travel.

A

Sound travels the fastest across solid as the particles are closer together and sound/energy can be passed on/transfer quicker. Sound travels the slowest through gas

A

Person speaks, producing sound wave that vibrates through the air causing particles to move back and forth Anne the sound travels to base of the pot.
It then hits the base and air particles that hit the base cause it to vibrate which causes the string to do the same and transmit the vibrations and we repeat for the other cup.

A

When waves combine (superimpose) with each other to form one big wave

How does superimposing work?

A

Two crests combine to form a super crest and two peaks combine to form a super peak and a crest and a trough will cancel out to make nothing. So we have one big wave
