The Volume of a Sound Wave
What do we measure sound in and what is the scale called?
We measure sound in dB (decibels) and we use the dBA scale.
What does SPL stand for and what does it refer to?
Sound pressure level - the amount of physical air movement
What does the dBVU scale stand for?
Decibels in volumetric units.
What does SNR stand for and what does it refer to?
Signal to noise ratio is the ratio between the amplitude of the recorded signal and the average amplitude of the noise in the system.
What is a waveform?
A waveform is a graphical representation of a recorded signal.
What are the fundamental characteristics of a waveform?
Amplitude Frequency Velocity Wavelength Phase Harmonic Content Envelope
What two aspects can we visually identify from a waveform?
Volume - the distance of the waveform from the centre line
Length - the time of the waveform
What is frequency measure in?
Hz (Hertz)
What two things is frequency used to describe?
The pitch of a sound
The number of cycles per second
If a waveform doubles in the number of cycles per second how does the pitch change?
The pitch increases by an octave
What will an EQ system do?
Increase or decrease the amount of frequencies in a sound.
What four key areas is an EQ system divided into?
Low frequencies
Low mids
High mids
High frequencies
What does EQ create in the mix?
Definition
