Text
The way that an actor delivers a line of dialogue.
Line Reading
An unstated meaning that underlines and is implied by spoken dialogue.
Subtext
The decibel level at which the dialogue or music is presented.
Volume
A sound’s frequency or position on a musical scale.
Pitch
A direct vocal address to the audience, which may emanate from a character or from a narrating voice.
Voice-Over
All of the sounds heard in the imagined world of the story.
Diegetic Sound
Any sound not contained in the story world, heard only by the audience.
Non-Diegetic Sound
Sound design that blends the speech of several characters talking simultaneously.
Overlapping Dialogue
The manipulation of the human voice and other sounds to convey perspective and details about the surrounding environment.
Acoustic Qualities
A type of short film that blends elements of documentary and avant-garde film.
City Symphony
A use of sound that can reveal a character’s cultural background, class, interests, or aspirations.
Speech Characteristics
Any noise that forms part of the film soundtrack, apart from the dialogue and music.
Sound Effects
Background music which sustains audience attention and lends coherence to a scene as it moves from shot to shot.

The speed of the sound or music.
