What is diegetic sound?
-the sound is part of the actors world
What is non-diegetic sound?
-the sound is outside the actors world
What is diegetic and non-diegetic sound for?
-method of directors smoothing out sound from one scene to another and helps the audience create meaning
What is an example of diegetic sound?
-an ambulance siren
What is an example of non-diegetic sound?
-romantic comedies when there’s music when they are about to kiss music starts playing
What is parallel sound?
-is in line with what we are seeing on screen->music matches the mood
What is contrapuntal sound?
-music is sound that does not match the feeling that is on the screen
What is an example of parallel sound?
-comedy
What is an example of contrapuntal sound?
-dark comedy->contrasts the scenes and makes the character look a certain way
What is synchronous sound?
-in line with what we are watching but is exaggerated diegetic sound
What is asynchronous sound?
-is when the sound is out of sync->artistic effect
What is an example of synchronous sound?
-an explosion going off that is too big of an explosion to what is happening
What is an example of asynchronous sound?
-someone screams but a train goes by so she metaphorically screamed as loud as the train
What is ambient sound?
-The sound from the surroundings
-Background noise
What is an example of ambient sound?
footsteps
What is sound bridge?
-Takes you from one scene to another and links them together
-When a sound crosses over
What is an example of sound bridge?
-The Matrix nightclub scene from the nightclub to the alarm
What is a motif?
-Recurring piece of music that indicates to the audience something is happening
-piece of music that is used to indicate a character
What is an example of a motif?
-In Friends when they go into the coffee house there’s music for the transition
-theme music
What is dialogue?
-Whenever we are referring to characters talking
What is a voiceover?
-Talking but the person isn’t shown in the shot-> voice over the top of the footage
What is an example of a voiceover?
-Tokyo in Money Heist
What are sound effects?
-Any effect/sound that is added in that could enhance a sound
-Could be expected or unexpected
What is an example of sound effects?
-Money Heist when they shoot the guns is exaggerated
What is direct address?
-Character talking to the audience and giving you their direct address
What is an example of direct address?
-Diary of a wimpy kid
What is a jump cut?
-it would look like the character is jumping/moving through time/space
What is an example of a jump cut?
time travel
What is a match cut?
-when u match an action with both cuts
What is an example of a match cut?
-walking down the stairs then transferring to a shot of feet reaching the bottom of the stairs
What is a cutaway?
-when one shot changes to another angle of the scene
What is an example of a cutaway?
-when there’s a time limit and it cuts to the character doing the task then the clock
What is a cross cut?
-cut away to a different scene but typically to identify that it is happening at the same time
-whatever you cross cut to it can change the meaning
What is an example of a cross cut?
-someone inside a house on fire and it changes to fire engine then back to the person
What is a shot-reverse-shot?
-a sequence of 3 edits together
What is an example of a shot-reverse-shot?
-one character is seen looking at the another character then it shows the other character and then goes back to the character (in conversations)
What is an eyeline match?
-when you cut to what the person is looking at
-usually a pov shot
What is an example of an eyeline match?
-talking about something then the camera showing it
