Sound Flashcards
In diagnostic ultrasound, sound pulses created by a transducer travel through what?
Biologic tissue, or media.
What do all waves carry from one location to another?
They carry energy from one location to another.
What are some types of waves?
Heat, sound, magnetic, and light.
What is sound?
Sound is a mechanical wave in which particles in the medium move.
Where can sound not travel though?
A vacuum; it requires a medium, where molecules are alternately compressed and rarefied.
In what direction do sound waves travel?
Sound travels in a straight line.
What type of waves are sound waves?
Longitudinal waves.
What are acoustic propagation properties?
It is the effect of the medium upon the sound wave.
What are biologic effects?
The effects of the sound wave upon the biologic tissue through which it passes.
How are sound waves indentified?
They are identified by oscillations in acoustic variables.
What are 3 types of acoustic variables?
Pressure, density and distance.
What are the acoustic variables used for?
They are used to distinguish between sound waves and other types of waves.
What is pressure?
It is a concentration of force in an area.
What is the unit for pressure?
Pascals (Pa)
What is density?
Concentration of mass in a volume.
