Sound Flashcards
How is sound produced
It is produced by vibrations, vocal cords, air molecules and ear drums
What can sound travel through
Sound can travel through solid, liquid or gas. It can’t travel through vacuum (no air) therefore it needs a medium to travel through
Sound and light
Light can travel through vacuum while sound cannot. Sound travels slower than light. This is why we see lightning before thunder
Echo
A reflection of sound. Dolphins can communicate and fishermen can find fish
Ultrasound
Sound above the level of hearing
How do we hear
Our ears detect sound vibrations in the air
Ear protection
If people are working in a job where sound is above 70db have to wear protection
Sound made by vibrations
Diaphragm of a speaker vibrates you can feel the air being pushed. A guitar or violin string will vibrate when plucked. Holding a ruler firmly at one end and bending it at the other causes vibrations that can be seen
What is a medium
A medium is either a solid, liquid or gas
Sound intensity level
The loudness of the sound is called the sound intensity level
What is a sound level meter
A sound level metre is used to measure the loudness of a sound in decibels
Sound
A form of energy
