Q

How is sound produced and heard by our ears?

A

Objects that are vibrating emit longitudinal waves that travel through the air by compressions and rarefactions. These vibrations are picked up by the ear and funnelled to the ear drum.

Q

Loudness and Amplitude

A

Sound can be quiet or loud, loudness tells us how much energy a sound wave has.
The larger the amplitude of a sound wave, the more energy it has and is louder. The smaller the amplitude of a sound wave, the lesser energy it has and is quieter.

Q

Pitch and Frequency

A

Pitch of a sound is shown by how many waves there are. The greater number of waves across the oscilloscope trace, the higher frequency and pitch. The lowest number of waves across the oscilloscope trace, the lower frequency and pitch.

Q

Why does Sound travel faster in solids than to liquid and gases?

A

Soundwaves travel faster through solids because the particles are closer together than in a liquid or a gas. This means vibrations are more easily passed from particle to particle.
