Q

What are sound waves and how do they travel?

A

Sound waves are vibrations containing energy. I soundwave begins with the vibration and disturbs air particles creating a compression. Sound carries energy through a medium without moving parts of the medium.

Q

What is a reflection of a sound wave?

A

When a sound wave is reflected it is called an echo. The harder and smooth the surface the stronger the reflection. Soft materials absorb sound that strikes them and may not give the strongest reflection.

Q

What is the diffraction of soundwaves?

A

Soundwaves do not travel in straight lines. They can diffract through openings to places like rooms for example. Sound waves bend around the surface like a corner as well

Q

What is the interference of a soundwave?

A

Soundwaves can meet and interact with each other. They can be destructive or constructive.

Q

How does elasticity affect the speed of sound?

A

Elasticity is the ability of a mineral to bounce back after being served. The more elastic a medium, the faster sound will travel. Solid particles move back-and-forth making it more elastic and easier for sound to travel.

Elasticity is determined by how the mediums particles bounce back. Elastic materials bounce back particles quickly and non elastic materials bounce back particle slowly.

Q

How does density affect the speed of sound?

A

Sound travels slower in denser mediums. Particles and dense material do not move as quickly in less dense materials.

Q

How does the temperature affect the speed of sound?

A

Lower temperatures have particles of the medium that move more slowly. Sound travels lower and higher altitudes. The speed of sound can be broken at the altitude of a place if it is accelerated past the speed at which sound should travel in that atmosphere.

Q

What is loudness in terms of a property of sound?

A

Loudness is the perception of how you hear sound. The closer you are the louder the sound is. Sound depends on the amount of energy takes to make the sound and the distance from the source of the sound.sound is measured in decibels.

The greater the energy used to make a sound, the louder the sound will be. The larger the amplitude, the more energy a wave has.The closer the sound is to its source, the more energy it has in a given area. The amount of energy always carries per second through our unit area is called its intensity.

Q

What is the intensity of the soundwave?

A

The intensity of a sound wave is the amount of energy it takes for a wave to carry per second through a unit area.

Q

What is pitch in terms of a property of sound?

A

Pitch is how low or high sound is. This depends on their frequency of the soundwave. Sound waves with a low-frequency have a low pitch. Frequency is measured in hertz.
