Sound Flashcards
What is a medium?
Medium is the source of matter that sound travels through from one point to another.
Ex: My voice travels through the medium of air.
What is sound?
Sound is vibrations that travel in longitudinal waves.
Explain rarefaction and compression.
Rarefaction is when an object spreads out sound particles or waves. Compression is when an object pushes sound waves or particles together.
What are 3 factors that affect the speed of sound?
Temperature-sound travels faster at higher temperatures and slower at lower temperatures
Stiffness-the more stiff the matter, the faster the sound travels
Density-the more dense a material, the slower the sound travels
What is Pitch? How is it measured and in what unit? Understand the relationship between frequency and pitch.
Pitch is how high to how low a sound seems to a person. It depends on the frequency of the waves or how fast the sound waves are vibrating. The faster the sound wave, the higher the frequency. Frequency is measured in hertz. (Hz)
What is Amplitude and how does it affect loudness? What unit measures loudness?
Amplitude measures the size or height of the sound waves. Amplitude affects the loudness of sound. The higher the amplitude, the louder the sound. Amplitude is measured in the units of decibels. (dB)
Explain the Doppler effect and give one example.
We hear a sound based on the position of the sound waves. The motion of the source of the sound causes the waves to spread or come together which affects the frequency of the sound waves.
Ex: We hear a siren at a higher pitched sound when the ambulance is in front of us or coming to us and the pitch lowers after the ambulance travels past out position and is traveling away.
