Sound Flashcards
What does the ear canal do?
It transmits sound to the ear drum.
What does the outer ear do?
It collects the sound waves.
What does the ear drum do?
It vibrates. Depending on the frequency or amplitude of the sound, it vibrates more or less, it then passes the sound to the middle ear.
What do the tiny bones do?
Amplify the sound wave and pass the sound to the inner ear.
What does the cochlea do?
The hair move with the vibrations through the fluids to the nerves and there is an electrical impulse.
What do the nerves do?
Take the electrical signal to the brain.
What does sound travel through?
Sound waves.
How far does sound travel? (Approx)
About 330 metres per second.
What is an echo?
An echo is when the sound wave is reflected back to you.
What is the speed of sound in water?
1500 meters per second
What is another word for echo-sounding? Where is it used?
Sonar. It is used in the ocean, mainly do detect what is underneath.
What are the air particles called? What do they do?
Molecules. When you speak, the molecules are pushed together and pulled apart, creating energy that then transmits the sound to you ear.
Why can’t you hear anything in space?
Because there is no vacuum which means that the sound can’t be transmitted.
What piece of equipment do you use to create a sound wave?
A signal generator.
What does frequency mean?
Pitch.
