Sound Flashcards
Describe a method to directly measure the speed of sound
- Two people are needed, one handling a stopwatch and the other a pistol.
- They should stand 100m away from each other. The distance between them can be measured with a trundle wheel.
- The one holding the pistol should fire it.
- The second person should start the stopwatch when they see the smoke and stop it when they hear the sound.
- Steps 3 and 4 should be repeated several times to get an average time.
- The speed can be found by using this equation: speed= distance travelled / time taken
Describe a method to find the speed of sound using echoes
- Two students should stand 50m away from a wall.
- This distance can be measured with a trundle wheel
- One holds two wooden blocks and the other a stopwatch.
- The wooden blocks should be banged together at a regular rate until the bang and the previous echo coincide.
- The second student should then measure the time for 20 bangs.
- Divide this time by 20 to find the average time for 1 bang,
- The distance between the students and the wall should be multiplied by two.
- The equation speed = distance travelled / time should be used to find the speed
What is the average speed of sound in solids?
2000 m/s
What is the average speed of sound in liquids?
1500 m/s
What is the average speed of sound in gases?
330 m/s
An oscilloscope is…
A device used to represent sound waves
What is the period?
The time, in seconds, for one complete oscillation
Frequency is…
The number of complete oscillations/vibrations made in one second. Its unit is Hertz (Hz)
Relationship between period and frequency?
T = 1/F
F = 1/T
F x T = 1
What is amplitude?
The maximum or minimum displacement of the sound wave from the resting point/equilibrium
It is the meaure of the loudness of sound
SI unit is metres
What is pitch?
How high or low a sound is
What is th relationship between frequency and pitch?
The higher the pitch, the higher the frequency
The lower the pitch, the lower the frequency
Frequency is high when…
When the crests are close together
What is the human hearing range?
20Hz - 20,000 Hz
What is ultrasound?
Sound above 20,000 Hz
