Sound Flashcards
Revise for science test.
What is a vaccum?
An area of space with no particles so sound can’t be heard.
What is pitch?
How high or low a sound is.
How do we change the pitch of a sound?
By changing how short or long the object is. The longer the object the lower the pitch. The shorter the object the higher the pitch. Like on a xylophone!
What is volume?
How loud or quiet a sound is.
How do we change the volume of a sound?
By changing the amount of force applied when hitting the object.
How is pitch measured?
In frequency or hertz (Hz)
How does sound travel?
In longitudinal waves.
What is the best medium for sound to travel in?
Solid.
What is it called when vibrations are passed through the medium?
Compressions.
What is a section of a longitudinal wave called?
A rarefaction.
How is amplitude shown in a sound wave?
By the height of a sound wave.
How is frequency shown in a sound wave?
By the spacing of the waves.
What are ears used for?
Hearing and balance.
What are the three ossicles called?
The hammer, the anvil, and the stirrup.
What turns the vibrations from the cochlea into electrical signals to send to the brain?
Hearing receptors.
