Q

Argument from recollection

A

Plato thinks we remember stuff from the forms
We remember the form of beauty when we see beauty in the world
Could be argued that the soul cannot see in the forms as seeing is a physical process

Q

Aristotle argument using axe and eye

A

I’d we imagine an axe and an eye to be living things then their souls would be their ability to chop would and ability to see (without these they are just matter)
The capacity to choose and see (soul) can’t exist without the axe and eye (body)

Descartes on why mind and body are separate

A

Everything around us could be an illusion but the fact he can still think shows his mind is there, his body may just be an illusion
If you amputate a limb then your mind is still clear

Q

Descartes solution to problems he faced

A

meeting point of the body and the mind is a small gland in the brain called the pineal gland (a very small organ in the centre of the brain which at the time had no known purpose).
He chose this gland because there are two of everything else in the head (eyes, nostrils, ears, hemispheres of the brain etc.) but only one pineal gland which appears to be indivisible. For Descartes, this is the home of the mind - thought, imagination, common sense etc.
