A

A theory that analyzes three parts of the soul
-a rational part (logistikon):which does the thinking and logic-seeks to understand the soul

Q

What is platos analogy of the charioteer?

A

-he uses this analogy to explain the tripartite soul
-Two horses (will and appetite) are controlled by the charioteer (reason). Plato believed that unless the charioteer kept control on the reins, will (the weaker horse) would be dragged in the direction that appetite (the stronger horse) wanted to go.

E.g. someone is in a loving relationship, their relationship begins to strengthen, the man wants to have sex with her to express this love, but the woman wants to wait until marriage. Man controlling horses represent the woman wanting to wait for marriage, the horses represent sex/not wanting to tarnish their relationship

Q

What’s the argument of geometry?

A

In The Meno Plato tells the story of how Socrates proved that an uneducated slave boy could be prompted by a series of questions and some shapes drawn in the sand to figure out how to solve a geometry question. The slave boy must therefore have been born with geometric concepts.
-Plato then seeks to explain how we could have been born with these concepts. His answer is that we must have somehow gained these concepts before we were born. It follows that there must be a part of us (our soul) which existed in the world of forms

Q

What’s the argument of opposites

A

,the idea that all things come into being from their opposites
P1-every quality comes into being from its opposite
P2-life is the opposite if death
P3-so death is the opposite of life
P4-nothing can turn into being from nothing
P5-therefore of you’re alive.you were also therefore dead before and so on
P6-there must be something that continues to exist that is you
Conc-the soul is therefore separate from the body
