A
- viral infections
- bacterial infections
- lasting up to a week.
- They can be the precursor to a cold.
- They can leave the throat feeling raw, sometimes hoarse, with pain on swallowing.

How can sore throats be relieved (5)
A
- mouthwashes
- gargles
- sprays
- lozenges
- pastilles.

When should people with sore throats be referred (3)
A
- If a person has white or yellow spots in their throat as this could be a sign of a bacterial or fungal infection and they may need to see their doctor.
- Anyone with a sore throat lasting more than seven days, with no other associated cold and flu symptoms.
- Refer anyone taking medicines which suppress the immune system (such as methotrexate) to the pharmacist if they present with a sore throat.

- Antiseptics (e.g. chlorhexidine)
- Anti-inflammatories (e.g. benzydamine) - spray and mouthwash
- Lozenges containing NSAIDs (e.g. flubiprofen) - over 12 years
- Local anaesthetics (e.g. benzocaine) - sprays and lozenges
