Decompression sickness is known as:
Gas bubble formation and “the bends”
Signs and symptoms of decompression sickness:
Dull ache that increases to a deep constant pain around the large joints, particularly the knees, shoulders or elbows
Skin tingling (crawls) burning rash sensation
Headache
Body weakness numbness
Chest tightness
Dizzy and feeling faint
Collapse
Ice packs must not left on a area for longer than:
20 mins
Recovery from hypoxia is rapid when given oxygen what may happen after oxygen is given :
A sudden onset on dizziness may happen, but will pass quickly
What must be done on descent for the ear:
Pressure on the ear cannot equalise because of the non return valve in the ear …so venting of the Middle ear must be done
Venting can be done by :
Swallowing
Yawning
Chewing
Blowing nose while holding nostrils
Sinus pain may also be felt in the :
Teeth
Jaw
Or a tooth ache
Gas pain (gastrointestinal tract) can also lead to
Lowered blood pressure
Go into shock
Immediate descent is required for relief
