Some Terminologies In Entomology Flashcards
What is Epidemiology?
It is the study of human disease patterns.
Examples include: Malaria, plague, Marine-14phoid, St.louis encephalitis e.t.c
What is vector-borne disease?
These are infectious diseases in which the micro-organism that cause the symptoms are transmitted by insects or other arthropods and other animals.
What is Epidemic disease?
An epidemic disease is usually large number of cases of a disease in humans occurring within a short period of time.
What is Epizootic disease?
An epizootic disease is usually large number of cases of a disease in animals occurring a short period of time.
What is Endermic disease?
This is the constant occurrence of a infections / disease causing agent in a given geographic areas in humans. If it occurs in animals, it is called Enzootic.
What is Anthroponoses?
These are infectious diseases carried by people and transferred to animals.
Examples include: tuberculosis, influenza.
What is Zoonosis?
This is an infectious disease of non-human vertebrates or (vertebrate animals) that is secondary transmissible to humans.
Among vector-borne disease, zoonosis are more common.
What are the three components to the life cycle of vector-borne disease?
- Pathogen: actual cause of disease
- Host
- Vectors: An insect capable of transmitting a disease pathogen.
What is Endo-parasite?
This is when a parasite live inside a host, mainly various microbial pathogen that lives on the skin of the host.
What is Ecto-parasite?
This is when a parasite lives outside of a host mainly insects and arthropods.
What is pathogencity?
This is the proportion of host that develop symptoms among those infected by a particular strain of a pathogen.
What is virulence?
This refers to the proportions of cases of infection that develops severe symptoms.
What is Epidomiologic ?
This term refers to presence of pathogens in the blood stream of infected host all end in ‘emia’.
For instance, parasites with be referred to as parasitemia while viruses will be referred to as virermia.
