Some stuff on evolution etc Flashcards
Natural Selection
The theory proposed by Darwin on the evolution of species, that through natural selection only those with the advantageous genes or traits would survive and pass on their traits to their offspring, whereas the rest would die out for those without the trait
Speciation
The formation of new and distinct species in the course of evolution
Continuous Variation
Differences between individuals that cover a range of values rather than discrete categrories ie height
Adaptation
A change in an organism that allows it to be adapted to its environment and helps the organism survive
Binomial Nomenclature
A system of naming organisms that uses two scientific latin names for the species
Ex Situ
The type of conservation of which seed banks are an example of (off site conservation, so away from its natural habitat)
Environmental Impact Assessment
A study carried out by a local planning authroity in order to judge the effect of development on the biodiversty of an area
Discontinuous Variation
Differences between individuals that cover discrete categories ie eye colour
In Situ
On site conservation ie organisms conserved in their natural habitats
Classification
The process of classifying organisms by anatomy, physiology, embryonic and behavioural
Evolution
A change in an organism genetically or otherwise, which can be inherited by offspring
Taxonomy
The science of classification
Phylogeny
The evolutionary history between organisms and how closely related they are to one another
Five Kingdoms Classification system
Domain => Kingdom => Phylum => Class => Order => Family => Genus => Species
Kingdoms: Prokaryotae, protoctista, fungi, plantain, animalia
3 Domains classification system
Kingdoms are sorted in to either 1 of 3 domains (superkingdom): Eukarya, Archaea, Bacteria
