Some revision Flashcards

1
Q

What are the functions of antibodies

A
  • Opsonisation
  • Activating B lymphocytes
  • Antigen clumping and inactivation of bacterial toxin
  • Activates antibody-dependent cellular activity
  • Triggers mast-cell degranulation
  • Activates complement

Q

What is complement

A
  • 20 tightly regulate proteins produced by the liver
  • Usually present in the ciculation as inactive molecules
  • When triggered will enzymatically activate other molecules in a cascade
  • Ripid highly amplified responce
  • Important in both inate and antibody mediated immunity

Q

What are the pathways which lead to compliment activation

A
  • Classical pathway = Antigen + antibody + C1
  • Lectin pathway = MBL (manose binding lectin) + Mannose+ve pathogen
  • Alternative pathway = Spontaneous C3 cleavage

Q

How is complement activation swtiched off

A

Fragments of complement which can dissolve the immune complex which

trigger them, switching off the complement activation - Negative feedback
