Some Reactions with Hydrocarbons Flashcards
why is carbon tetrachloride a good solvent for preparing the bromine solution? (3)
- it is miscible with Br and all samples used
- it is inert
- minimizes bromine evaporation due to bromine being dilute in solution
how is the test waste of the Br tests managed?
Br is an oxidizer, so a reducer must be added (K2SO4) and then placed in halogenated bottle
How can you tell if the Br waste has been managed?
colour change from brownish-red to clear and colourless
how is the waste of the KMnO4 tests managed?
KMnO4 is an oxidizer, so reducer must be added (K2SO3), then neutralized with acid, filtered to separate solids (garbage) and the filtrate is placed in the non-halogenated bottle
why are metal acetylides extremely hazardous?
likely to explode
how are metal acetylides treated?
decomposing with 6M HNO3 and neutralizing with a base (NaOH), and put into non-halogenated bottle
which reaction type gives off gas?
substitution
