Some Data Terminology Flashcards
Primary data
Primary data is collected by the user of the data
Secondary data
Secondary data is second hand (company using Gov stats)
Qualitive (categorical)
Data not measured nor counted (eye colour)
Quantitive (numeric)
Data that has been measured or counted (age)
Discrete
Data that has distinct, separate values (shoe size)
Continuous
Data that has a range of continuous values (height) 178 cm doesnt mean you’re exactly 178 cm.
Raw data
Data that has not yet been processed
Cleaned data
Data that has had errors and omissions corrected or otherwise dealt with.
Unordered
Data that is not ordered
Ordered
Data that is ordered usually by magnitude.
Ungrouped data
Data where each value is known exactly. Only discrete data can be ungrouped.
Grouped data
Data is grouped into classes. Usually collated in a frequency table (continuous data is always grouped)
Single variable data
Data where each item has just one property (just weight)
Bivariate data
Paired data where each item has two properties (weight and height)
Multivariate data
Data where each item has more than two properties
