Somatosensory System - Mechanosensation Flashcards
What are primary afferent fibres?
The first fibre between the periphery and the CNS that takes information to the CNS
What is the somatosensory system?
Mediates all sensations that are not visual, auditory, gustatory, olfactory, or the vestibular sense of equilibrium
What are the 5 sensory modalities?
Mechanosensations - touch, pressure, vibration
Nociception - pain
Thermosensation - temperature
Proprioception - joint and muscle position sense
Pruriceptions - itch
4 locations of somatic sensation?
Exteroceptive sensations - cutaneous senses from body surface
Proprioceptive sensations - sensors in muscles, tendons, joints, concerns posture/movement
Visceral sensations - internal organs
Deep sensations - fasciae (deep tissue), muscles and bones
