  • A: 1 or more somatic sx –> disruption of daily life
  • B: Excessive thoughts, feelings, behaviors related to somatic symptoms
    - disprop/persistent thoughts
    - high level of anxiety
    - excessitve time/energy spent
  • C: duration: 6 months

Specifications:

  • predominant pain
  • persistent (>6 months)
  • mild: 1 of criterion B
  • mod: 2 or more criterion B
  • severe: 2 or more crit B + multiple somatic complaints

Illness Anxiety Disorder

A
  • A: Preoccupation of having a serious illness
  • B: Somatic sx are not present or mild. Preoccupation is disprop/excess.
  • ## C: high level of anxiety or easily alarmed

Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder

AKA Conversion Disorder

A

A: One or more symptoms of motor/sensory function
B: Clinical findings show evidence of incompatibility between the symptoms and recognized neurological/medical conditions
C: symptoms or deficits is not better explained by another medical/mental disorder
D: significant distress/impairment in social, occupational, any function

  1. If psychological stressor or not (do not need)
  2. Duration: Acute: <6 mo. Persistent: >6 mo.
  3. Symptom type:
    - w/ weakness or paralyis
    - w/ abnormal movement (tremor, dystonia, myoclonus, gait)
    - w/ swallowing sx
    - w/ speech sx (dysphonia, slurred speech)
    - w/ attacks or seizures
    - ——
    - w/ special sensory sx (visual, olfactory or hearing disturbance)
    - w/ mixed sx

Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures

  • tend to be in low IQ

“Rule of 2’s”

  • 2 episodes/week (PNES)
  • 2 EEGs w/o epileptiform activities
  • 2 antiepileptic drugs do not help

  • combination of individual / family therapy
  • CBT, family therapy, interpersonal/psychodynamic therapy
  • Response plan* - that does not reinforce episodes
    - ex: That was a bad one… are you ready to go to school?
