Somatic Diseases and Conditions Flashcards
AD
(Alzheimer’s Disease) idiopathic atrophy (shrink) of neurons in brain
ALS
(Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis) aka Lou Gherig’s Disease; degeneration of skeletal motor neurons (Steven Hawking); idiopathic; ice bucket challenge
Bell’s Palsy
hemiplegia of the face. Cranial nerve 7; could be from a virus; if it ruptures, then CVA
TBI
(Cerebral Contusion) brain bruise
CP
(Cerebral Palsy) usu due to birth trauma. Brain goes without oxygen for too long and causes it to not develop normally. Can get it from toxicity such as moms drinking or a disease can lead to CP
CVA
(Cerebrovascular Accident) loss of blood supply in brain (“stroke”)
- Hemorrhagic Stroke: ruptured aneurysm; more common
- Ischemic Stroke: artery blocked
Coma
brain turns off everything except vital body functions
possible TX- sit in a dark room
Concussion
bruising/injury to brain from sports/trauma that causes headaches, nausea, dizziness, blurry eyesight, memory problems
Dementia
precursor to AD or may not progress at all
EDH
(Epidural Hematoma) bleeding from trauma in between the dura mater and skull; can cause intracranial pressure to increase
Epilepsy
disease that causes seizures - Arrhythmia of brain
GB Syndrome
(Gullain-Barre Syndrome) inflammation of PNS post infection; progressive muscle weakness that may lead to paralysis; can last 18 months
MS
(Multiple Sclerosis) autoimmune that attacks the myelin which causes communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body
PD
(Parkinson’s Disease) Idiopathic brain disease that causes uncontrollable movements, such as stiffness and difficulty with balance and coordination, and causes tremors; doesn’t have many TX; symptoms usu begin gradually and worsen over time
Polio
(Poliomyelitis) viral infection of the nervous system that causes paralysis; tx-vaccine
Shingles
herpes (chicken pox) viral infection that causes breakout along ribs; old people get it; very painful and itchy; tx- antiviral medications
SDH
(Subdural Hematoma) similar to EDH except the bleed will be underneath the dura mater, not between the dura mater and skull
Syncope
fainting
TIA
(Transient Ischemic Attack) “mini-stroke”; Angina is to MI as TIA is to CVA; a warning sign of a stroke, but not an actual stroke
