Solutions, crystals and solubility curves Flashcards
What is a solvent?
A solvent is a substance that dissolves other materials to form a solution.
What is a solution?
A solution is perfect mixture of a solute and solvent.
What is a solute?
A solute is the substance that dissolves into water example sugar
What is meant by soluble?
A substance that dissolves in water is said to be Soluble eg sugar.
What is meant by insoluble?
A substance that does not dissolve in water is said to be in soluble eg sand.
What is meant by suspension?
A suspension is a mixture in which small solid or liquid particles are suspended in liquid or gas.
Explain dilute solution?
A dilute solution is one in which there is a small amount of solute in a large amount of solvent?
What is a concentrated solution?
A concentrated solution is one in which there is a large amount of solute in a small amount of solvent.
What is a crystal?
A crystal is solid with a regular shape. the particles inside the crystal are arranged in a regular pattern.
How to grow crystals.
- grind up copper sulphate
- add to 100cm3 of water
- heat water to 60degrees
- add in more copper sulphate
- pour in to an evaporating basin, cool over night. crystals will form.
What is a saturated solution?
A saturated solution is one that contains as much dissolved solute as possible at a given temperature.
What is the solubility curve?
A solubility curve shows how the solubility of a substance changes with increasing temperature
