Solutions and solubility Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
A pure substance is a substance that cannot be separated by any separation technique. (See deck 1)
What is a mixture?
A mixture is 2 substances that are mixed together. This could be a solid, a liquid or a gas.
What is a solute?
A solute is a substance that can be dissolved in a solvent. Eg: sugar in water.
What is a solvent?
A solvent is used to dissolve a solute in it. E.g: Water, Tetrachloroethylene.
What is a soluble substance?
A soluble substance is a substance that can be dissolved in another substance.
What is a sediment?
A sediment is solid material that settles at the bottom of a liquid. This is used in Decantation. (See deck 1)
What is a solution?
A solution is a type of mixture involving two or more substances.
What is a suspension?
A mixture in which solids do not dissolve.
A substance that is soluble is… This occurs when?
A substance is soluble when it dissolves in a liquid, when this occurs depends on the liquid and the temperature and pressure.
What is concentration?
Concentration is the amount of room between the particles of a solute.
Concentrated = crowded particles
Dilute = spaced out particles
who has the rizziest gyat
What is a homogeneous mixture?
A mixture that is uniform throughout.
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
A mixture that is not uniform throughout.
