Solutions And Solubility Flashcards
Define solvent
Liquid part of a solution
Define solute
A solid that dissolves in a solvent
Define solution
Mixture of a solvent and solute
Define suspension
Where the solid particles are not dissolved in a liquid
Give an example of suspension
Calpol
Define miscible
2 LIQUIDS that mix
Define immiscible
2 liquids that form layers and don’t mix
Define mixture
A mix of 2+ substances that aren’t chemically bonded
Define saturated
When you have dissolved the most possible solute
Describe how solute and solvent particles mix
They collide. The solvent particles surround the solute particles, eventually making them spread evenly through the solvent.
Is dissolving a physical or chemical change and why?
It is a physical change because only the state of matter has changed
Why is the matter the same in a solution as the solute and solvent separately?
Because no matter is lost, the solute is still there but isn’t visible.
Give examples of how to speed up dissolving (3)
- stirring
- heating
- decreasing the particle size of the solid
Is when crystals appear a saturated solution?
Yes, after the saturation point is reached, the solute precipitates and makes crystals
How does temperature effect the solubility of gas
It decreases because as the gas particles’ kinetic energy increases, they escape the attraction of the solvent molecules and return to gas
