Solutions and Dilutions Flashcards
What does API stand for?
Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient
What is an excipient?
Any other component of medicines that isn’t API
What is Route of Administration?
The path medicines take into the body
What is a solution?
A solution is a homogeneous mixture of 2 or more substances in a single phase
What is a solvent?
Solvent is the component present in larger quantities in a solution
What is a solute?
A solute is the component present in smaller quantities in a solution
What is solubility?
Maximum of quantity of solute which can dissolve in a given solvent quantity
What is meant by saturated solution?
A solution is saturated when no more solute can dissolve and there is excess. Particles switch in and out of the saturated solution
How is solubility expressed?
Solubility is expressed in terms of concentration
What is a mole fraction?
Mole fraction is the number of moles of solute over the total number of moles in a mixture
What is the equation for mole fraction?
n(solute) / n(solute) + n(solvent)
What is molarity?
The number of moles of solute dissolved in 1L of solution
What are the units of molarity?
molL^-1
What is a molar solution?
1 molL^-1
What is %w/v
The number of grams of solute in 100ml of solution
What is %w/w
The number of grams of solute in 100g of solution
What is density?
Ratio of an object’s mass to its volume
What is the equation for density?
Density = mass/volume
What are the standard units of density?
gcm^-3
What is 0°C in K?
0°C = 273K
What is a qualitative observation?
A change in colour or physical appearance
What is 0°C in °F?
0°C = 32°F
What can lead to variations in molarity?
Temperature changes can affect solution density and therefore molarity
