Solutions Flashcards
Molarity
moles solute/volume solution
molar solubility
molarity of a saturated solution - max moles dissolved per L solvent
solvent
component in greater proportion
saturated
solution is no longer capable of dissolving added solute
unsaturated
capable of dissolving more solute
solubility
amount of substance needed to make a saturated solution
miscible
2 liquids are completely soluble in one another regardless of proportion
immiscible
substances will not mix (oils and water)
miscibility vs solubility
solubility generally refers to solids dissolving, while miscibility refers to two liquids
dissociation
ions of ionic compounds pulled apart - waters dipoles align itself to other polar substances
- often spontaneous and exothermic
rule of thumb for miscibility
polar/polar and non polar/non polar will dissolve, polar/non polar will not dissolve
electrolyte
conducts electricity - produced when ionic solutions dissociate
