Solutions Flashcards
Define dilute
A dilute solution is thinner/ weaker liquid due to adding water
Define Aqueous solutions
An aqueous solution is homogeneous solution that is soluble (solvent always is water)
Define solvent
A Solvent is the substance that causes other substances to dissolve (water)
Define solute
A solute is the substance that dissolves in a solvent
Define polar molecules
polar molecules are water molecules with positive and negative ends
Define polar compounds
polar compounds dissolves well in water (example: sugar, acid, alcohol)
Define non polar compounds
non polar compounds do not dissolve (example: carbohydrates, oil, grease)
Do ionic compounds dissolve
Yes ionic compounds dissolve well in water
Define Molarity
molarity tells the number of moles per litre
Define Electrolytes
electrolytes are substances that increase conductivity
Define Strong electrolytes
strong electrolytes disassociate/ dissolve 100%
Define weak electrolytes
weak electrolytes partial ionizes
Define non electrolytes
non electrolytes are soluble but do not conduct electricity
Define supersaturated
supersaturated is when the solution is overly saturated, it cannot dissolve anymore solute
Define saturated
saturated is a solution with just enough solute
