Solutions Flashcards
solvent
the substance in which a solute dissolves to make a solution
solute
the substance dissolved in a solvent
suspension
a mixture that appears to be uniform but seperates later
colloid
a mixture with small particles suspended in the solvent
solution
a stable homogeneous mixture that will not seperate
types of mixtures from largest particles to smallest
suspension, colloid, solution
Tyndall effect
light can pass through solutions with smaller particles
solubility
the maximum amount of a chemical that will dissolve in a given quantity of a solvent at a specific temperature while the solution is in contact with undissolved solute.
soluble
can be dissolved in a particular solvent
insoluble
does not dissolve in a particular solvent
unsaturated
a condition in which the solvent is capable of dissolving more solute at the given tempurature
saturated
a condition in which the solvent contains the amount of solution specified by the solubiility
supersaturated
a condition in which the solvent contains more solute than specified by the solubility at the given conditions.
miscible
indicates liquids that will dissolve in each other
immiscible
indicates liquids that will not dissolve appreciably in each other.
