Solutions Flashcards
soluble…
Something that CAN dissolve.
insoluble…
Something that CANNOT dissolve.
dissolve…
When a soluble solid (such as salt or sugar) is stirred with a liquid (such as water), the solid particles separate and spread out amongst the liquid particles.
The solid looks like it has disappeared but it is still there, it’s just broken up into such small pieces that we can’t see them
solute…
solid that dissolves e.g. salt or sugar.
solvent…
liquid that a solute dissolves into e.g. water, alcohol or white spirit
solution…
what is made when a solute dissolves into a solvent.
suspension…
when small pieces (or powder) of an insoluble solid are mixed with a liquid,
the solid does not dissolve and the little pieces of solid are ‘suspended’ in the liquid making it look cloudy.
saturated solution…
solution that no more solute will dissolve into
we know a solution is saturated when the solute stops dissolving and stays as solid.
