Solutions Flashcards

1
Q

What is a solution?

A

A solution is a liquid mixture in which a minor component (the solute) is uniformly distributed within the major component (the solvent)

A solution is a mixture formed when a solute dissolves into a solvent.

Q

What happens when a substance dissolves?

A

When a substance dissolves, solvent particles surround the solute particles. THe particles move and are arranged randomly as a result.

Q

What is solubility?

A

Solubility is the maximum mass of a solute that dissolves in 100g of water. Traditionally when the temperature of a solvent increase the solubility increases.

Solubility is a property of substances

Q

Soluble vs insoluble

A

Substances that will dissolve in a solvent are called soluble however those that will not are called insoluble

Examples of soluble substances are:
Salt
Sugar
Powdered food colouring
Coffee
Cocoa powder
Candy Floss
Gelatin

however, things like sand, fats, wood, metal, plastic, lead chloride, glass and iron fillings are insoluble.
