Solution Notes Flashcards
Solution (soln)
Homogenous mixture made of a solute and a solvent
*soln can be L,S,G
Solute
Substance being dissolved
Solvent
Substance that dissolved the solute
*water is the universal solvent
Soluble
The ability to dissolve
Insoluble
Can’t dissolve in water etc.
Miscible
Two liquids that “mix”
Immiscible
Two liquids that don’t mix
Solvation
Process of surrounding a solute with a solvent
Hydration
Solvation of water
How to increase rate of Solvation
- Agitation
- Increase the temp of the solvent
- Increase the surface area of the solute
Super saturated soln
Contains more dissolved solute than a saturated soln
- unstable
- heat saturated soln add more solute cool slowly
Stock solutions
Concentrated solutions from which diluted solutions are made
Solubility
Amount in grams of a solute that can dissolve in 100g of a solvent at S.T.P
How to increase rate of Solvation
- Agitation
- Increase the temp of the solvent
- Increase the surface area of the solute
Super saturated soln
Contains more dissolved solute than a saturated soln
- unstable
- heat saturated soln add more solute cool slowly
