Solubility facts Flashcards
Is magnesium sulphate soluble in water?
magnesium sulphate is soluble
Is calcium sulphate soluble in water?
calcium sulphate is sparingly soluble
Is strontium sulphate soluble in water?
No, strontium sulphate is insoluble
Is barium sulphate soluble in water?
No, barium sulphate is insoluble
What is stronger, the attraction of a Sr ion to a sulphate ion or a water molecule?
Attraction to the sulphate ion, that’s why it doesn’t dissolve.
If you add sulphuric acid to magnesium chloride solution, what would you see?
No change, the magnesium, chloride and sulphate ions all stay in solution
If you add sulphuric acid to barium chloride solution, what would you see?
Solid white barium sulphate would precipitate out.
If you add sulphuric acid to calcium hydroxide solution, what occurs?
A neutralisation reaction, forming calcium sulphate which may precipitate out.
What is the trend in solubility of group 2 hydroxides?
It increases as you go down the group (opposite to sulphates)
Is calcium hydroxide soluble in water?
Sparingly, but enough to make ‘lime water’ solution.
Is barium hydroxide soluble in water?
barium hydroxide is soluble
If you add sodium hydroxide solution to a solution of magnesium nitrate, what do you see?
A precipitate of white magnesium hydroxide forms.
