Solubility Equilibria Flashcards
1
Q
What is a saturated solution
A
- contains a maximum amount of solute in a given amount of solvent such that the ions are in equilibrium with the solid
2
Q
What is solubility
A
- it is the maximum amount of solute that dissolves in 1dm3 to form a standard solution at a stated temperature
3
Q
How to determine solubility of sparingly soluble salt at given temperature
A
- prepare the saturated solution by dissolving the salt until no more solid can dissolve, and undissolved solid remains in the solution
- filter to remove the undissolved solid
- perform a titration to determine the concentration of the salt that dissolved in the solution
4
Q
What is the common ion effect
A
- the phenomenon of reduced solubility with the addition of a common cation or anion to a sparingly soluble salts is called the common ion effect
5
Q
What is ionic product
A
- the product of concentration of constituent ions in the solution at that instant raised to the power of stoichiometric coefficient
6
Q
When and why does precipitation occur
- ionic product<Ksp
- ionic product=Ksp
- ionic product>Ksp
A
- no precipitation is observed since solution is still unsaturated
- the solution is saturated and the system is in equilibrium
- precipitation occurs until ionic product = Ksp
