Q

How to determine solubility of sparingly soluble salt at given temperature

A
  • prepare the saturated solution by dissolving the salt until no more solid can dissolve, and undissolved solid remains in the solution
  • filter to remove the undissolved solid
  • perform a titration to determine the concentration of the salt that dissolved in the solution

Q

When and why does precipitation occur
- ionic product<Ksp
- ionic product=Ksp
- ionic product>Ksp

A
  • no precipitation is observed since solution is still unsaturated
  • the solution is saturated and the system is in equilibrium
  • precipitation occurs until ionic product = Ksp
