Solubility Flashcards
What is water solubility mean?
an effective solvent as it can form hydrogen bonds.
Water clings to polar molecules causing them to be soluble in water (Hydrophilic- attracted to water)
Water tends to exclude nonpolar molecules (Hydrophobic - repelled by water)
3 factors that affect boiling point
1) relative strength three intermolecular force
2) molecular mass
3) branching decreases boiling point
how does the number of carbon affect the boiling point?
- increase mass
- increase in amount of inter forces
- increase in boiling point
Why does branching affect boiling point?
space between molecule = less inter forces
more rod-like the molecules are, the better able they will be to line up and bond
what are Aliphatic alcohols?
classified into categories according according to the number of R groups attached to the carbon with the hydroxyl
1 R group: primary alcohol (no branching)
2 R groups: secondary alcohol (same branching)
3 R groups: tertiary alcohol (lots of branching)
what are the properties of alcohols?
- capable of hydrogen bonding
- high boiling point
- solubility in water up to 4 carbons, less soluble the more carbons
