SOLIDS, LIQUIDS & GASES Flashcards
Matter
It is everything around us and anything that has mass and takes up space (it has volume).
What is the process called when a liquid becomes a gas?
evaporation
What is the point at which a liquid turns to vapour?
Boiling point
When does a gas become a liquid by removing heat?
condensation
When does a liquid become a solid by removing heat?
Freezing
What is the name of the reverse process of condensation?
evaporation
What is CONDENSATION?
It is the process where gas becomes liquid.
How do particles behave when boiled?
They vibrate more and faster, they start to have steam and fling out because they are vibrating violently.
Melting point meaning
The point when something BEGINS to melt.
Boiling point meaning
The point when something BEGINS to boil.
water= 100°C
Freezing point meaning
The point when something BEGINS to freeze. (water=0°C)
Expansion meaning
It means increase in size when they get warmer.
Contraction
It means they decrease in size when they get cooler.
Do all things have a different melting and boiling point?
YES
Are contraction and expansion opposites?
YES
What do particles in a solid do?
The particles in a solid are closely packed together and just vibrate on the spot.
What do particles in a liquid do?
The particles in a liquid are packed closely together but are able to move about and slide over one another. This gives the particles the ability to flow.
What do particles in a gas do?
Gas particles push against the walls of the balloons. This pushing results in pressure which keeps the balloons inflated.
Sublimation
Solid to a gas (without going through the liquid)
Deposition
Gas to a solid (without going through the liquid)
