Solids , liquids and gases Flashcards
What is a solid?
Firm and stable in shape
How are the particles arranged in a solid?
All very close and arranged in a regular order . They can’t get squished or compressed , the only way they move is by vibrating.
What happens when the particles get hot?
The hotter a solid gets, the faster its particles vibrate. This means that solids expand when they are heated.
How are particles arranged in a liquid?
Arranged in a random way, and are close together, touching many of their neighbours. There are some gaps, but liquids cannot usually be compressed or squashed.
Give 3 examples of a liquid?
-Water
-Oil
-Juices
How are particles arranged in a gas?
The particles in gases are widely spaced and randomly arranged, meaning they can be easily compressed or squashed.
Can gasses move in any direction?
Yes and they move quickly in straight lines
What is a particle?
A particle is a single piece of matter from an element or a compound, which is too small to be seen.
What could particles be?
Particles can be atoms , molecules or ions
What are the definitions of atoms , molecules and ions?
Atoms ~ The smallest particle of an element and they are made from smaller particles called protons , neutrons and electrons.
Molecules ~ Two or more atoms which are strongly bonded together it has all of the physical and chemical properties .
Ions ~ An atom or molecule that has either a positive or negative electrical charge.
How particles in liquids move?
Freely over each other
