What is the purpose of Solder?
A
Used for joining metals by flowing an alloy, solder, between the surfaces to be joined

What is the purpose of Flux?
A
Used to provide a chemically clean surface and allows the solder to flow more rapidly

If undertaking soldering indoors, what must be made available prior to work commencing?
A
local exhaust ventilation must be available

How are electric soldering irons classified?
A
- Voltage
- Wattage

If using a gas torch what precautions should be taken?
A
- Ensure the correct type of fire extinguisher is available
- The gas must not be ignited within 15m of aircraft, MT vehicles, or inflammable stores
- When lit, but not in use, the flame must be directed toward a metal or brick background.
- In field conditions where the aforementioned is not available, flame is to be directed towards a safe area away from personnel.

What are the common causes of Dry Joints?
A
- Dirty surfaces
- Iron too hot
- Iron too cool
- Excessive or wrong type of flux
- Excessive or wrong type of solder
- Surfaces not brought firmly together
