Solar System Quiz Flashcards
What is the order of the planets?
Mercury, Venus, earth, mars, Asteroid belt, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Kuiper’s Belt
What are some characteristics of the terrestrial (inner) planets.
They have shorter orbits. They are rocky and have metallic cores. They’re more dense. They rotate slower because they have less mass and they are warmer.
What are some characteristics of the Gas Giants? (outer planets)
They are colder. They rotate faster because they have more mass and they have a longer orbit. They are less dense and They are made up of gas.
Why did the outer planets have the most moons?
They have more mass, so they have more gravity, which means more gravitational pull.
What are the two factors that affect gravity?
Mass and distance.
What is the name of the theory that scientists use to currently explain how the solar system formed?
The Nebular Theory.
According to this theory, how old is the solar system?
4.5 or 4.6 billion years old.
What is an AU?
An astronomical unit.
What does 1AU measure?
The distance from the Sun to the Earth.
What is Kepler‘s first law?
Objects orbit, the sun in eclipses with two main focal points.
What is Kepler‘s second law?
Orbital speech change based on how far the object is from the sun.
What is Kepler’s third law?
Planets, far from the sun take longer to orbit.
