Solar System & Early Earth Flashcards
What is a nebula?
Clouds of dust and gas, products of big bang
What is the nebular hypothesis?
Our Sun likely formed from a large mass of collapsing gas within an interstellar cloud
The steps for the nebular hypothesis
- Nebular gas collapses under force of gravity
- Gravity pulls slowly swirling cloud of dust and gas inward, making it hotter and denser
- Nuclear fusion begins due to high heat and pressure
- The cooler outer portions of the solar systems had become compressed enough to condense solid particles and liquid droplets from the gas
What is Planetary Accretion?
Through accretion, condensates became the building blocks of the planets, moons, and solid bodies, in the solar system
What are terrestrial planets? / Rocky planets
Mercury, Venus, Mars, Earth
What are Jovian planets/ gas giants (HYDROGEN AND HELIUM)
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto
Terrestrial planets are HEAVIER
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars
HAVE Silicon, oxygen, Iron, Aluminum, Magnesium
Moon Hypothesis
Evidence suggests that Earth was impacted by a large body about the size of Mars during the later stages of its accretion
WHEN WAS MOON FORMED?
4.5 Billion Years Ago
Tilted Orbital plane to 23 DEGREES
FAINT YOUNG SUN
Sun 30% less bright than it is today
Water should be frozen at surface
3.8 billion years ago, life emerged with the existence of liquid water
Early greenhouse gasses of Early Earth
CO2 and CH4 (Methane)
Where di Greenhouse Gasses come from?
Earth’s interior Volcanoes,
and weathering of rocks
VERY LITTLE 02 until 2.7 Billion Years Ago
