Solar system Flashcards
How was the solar system formed?
1) Stated as small point then rapid expansion after Big Bang
2) As expanded hydrogen bonds formed as it cooled, protostars formed inside nebulae
3) H2 fuses to Helium forms a star, forms heavier elements
4) Initial stars collapse, generating heat, heavy element production and explosions (forms nebulae)
5) Nebulae cloud, gas and debris coalesce and condenses into a protoplanetary disk, which spins around central mass
6) As centre heats up nuclear fusion begins and P disks align to rings
7) These coalesces forming planetesimals, which accumulate and differentiate
What does a nuebular condense into?
Protoplanetary disk
What do protoplanetary disk coalesces into?
Planetesimals
How was the moon created?
Planet called The collided with young Earth, this removes some of the mantle forming the moon
Why was the earth originally inhospitable?
Volcanic activity and release go gases
What could have transferred amino acids to Earth?
Comets
What are the Oort Cloud and Kuiper belt?
Oort Cloud - contains objects made of ice
Kuiper belt - contains ice objects and dwarf planets
What occurred in the Archean eon?
- start of plate tectonics
- oldest rocks originate this time
What occurred in the Proterozoic eon?
- evolution of cyanobacteria (more O2)
- more aerobic respiration (eukaryotic0
- forms ozone layer
What are the Milankovitch cycles
Precession
Eccentricity
Tilt
Facts about sun
- Sun is a virtual black body (bb radiation)
- Absorbs all electromagnetic radiation
- Defined emission spectrum
