solar system Flashcards
4 Rocky Planets
Mars, Earth, Venus, Mercury
4 Gas Giants
Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, Jupiter
Size difference between rocky planets and gas giants
The rocky planets are a lot smaller than the gas giants.
What does it mean for people living in the umbra during a solar eclipse
There won’t be any light during a solar eclipse. It’ll be like midnight
What’s the cause of seasons?
The earth rotates some parts face the sun while others don’t that’s why for us it’s hot in June while in other places it’s colder.
Three most important lines on the earth?
The equator, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn
List the planets in the correct order from closest to the sun to farthest.
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus Neptune
Which planet is larger?
Mars- 1.409 x 1024 OR Uranus- 1.914 x1026
Uranus- 1.914 x1026
Which planet is larger?
Saturn 1.253 x 1027 OR Neptune 2.258 x 1026
Neptune 2.258 x 1026
Which planet is larger?
Mercury 7.242 x 1023 OR The Moon 1.61988 x 1023
Mercury 7.242 x 1023
Difference between weight and mass
Weight depends on gravity. Depending on the amount of gravity is how much something will weigh you down. But weight can change. Mass can’t. Mass is how much matter an object has. So if you’re on the moon which has less gravity than the earth. You’re mass won’t change but your weight will.
Both Brian and June weigh 73lbs on Earth, but their weights are very different when they go to separate planets. Explain why Brian weighs more when he goes to Neptune
Brian weighs more when he goes to Neptune because Neptune has a force of gravity of 1.23. Gravity makes you a lot heavier so of course, Brian’s weight will also be heavier.
Define the term Satellite
An object that has been intentionally placed in the Earth’s orbit. Like how the moon is Earth’s natural satellite.
When the Earth is engulfed in a shadow cast by the Moon which fully or partially blocks sunlight. What kind of eclipse is that?
Solar Eclipse
Explain why we see different phases of the moon at different times of the month. Talk about how the moon revolves around the earth.
We see different phases of the moon at different times of the month because it’s revolving around the earth. The moon follows a cycle that goes on about a month. So that’s why sometimes we see a full moon or sometimes even nothing at all if it’s in the new moon phase.
