Solar energy and the earths seasons Flashcards
What does the tilt of the earth’s axis affect?
The angle at which the sun’s rays shine on the earth
When is the intensity of heat greater?
When light directly shines on an object
How do the sun’s rays shine on the southern hemisphere during South African summer?
They shine directly onto the southern hemisphere
How does the sun shine on the northern hemisphere during southern hemisphere summer?
It shines at an oblique angle therefore making the heat less intense
What are tides?
They are the predictable, repeated rise and fall of sea and ocean levels
What are tides on Earth caused by?
Mostly the gravity of the moon which pulls on the water in the seas and oceans
How many high and low tides are there normally during the day?
There are normally two high tides and two low tides
What are the 2 different types of tides?
Spring tides and Neap tides
What happens during Neap tides?
The low tides are higher and the high tides are lower
What happens during Spring tides?
The high tides are higher and the low tides are lower
What is the line that separates night and day called?
The line of illumination
