Soils Flashcards
What is Clay Soil?
A type of soils that consists of a large number of clay particles and very small amount of humus and silt
What is Sandy Soil?
Formed by the smallest or fine particles of weathering rocks
What is Siltty Soil?
slippery when wet, not grainy or rocky
What is Soil Conservation?
A combination of particles used to protect the soil from degradation
What is Soil Remediation?
Involves the elimination of contaminants from the soil through a range of Chemical, Physical and Biological means that can be applied to carry it out
What is Soil Profile?
a vertical cross-section of the soil, made of layer running parallel to the surface
What is Soil Horizon?
A distinct layer of soil, approximately parallel with the land surface, whose properties develop from the combined actions of living organisms and percolating water
What are windbreaks?
a thing, such as a row of trees, wall or screen, that provides shelter or protection from the wind
What is Peat Moss?
A large absorbent moss that grows in dense masses on boggy ground, where the lower parts decay slowly to form Peat deposits.
What is pH?
A measure of how acidic or basic a substance or solution is.
What is Carbon?
the chemical element of atomic number 6, a nonmetal which has two main forms and which also occurs in impure form in charcoal, soot, and coal.
carbon dioxide or other gaseous carbon compounds released into the atmosphere, associated with climate change
What is a No Tillage Farming?
an increase in the organic matter of the soil, and a decrease in the amount of erosion
What is Strip Farming?
the growing of a cultivated crop in strips alternating with strips of a sod forming crop (such as hay) arranged to follow an approximate contour of the land and minimize erosion
What is a Sequester?
What is Macronutrients?
elements which plants require in relatively large amounts where mirconutrients are those which plants require in mush smaller amounts
